Dorm Room Ideas and Must Have Essentials

If you’re a student that’s moved into a dorm room this semester (or will be living in a dorm at a future date), I’m sure you understand that your dorm room will become your second home. And, just like your room at home (your parent’s home), you want to make sure that your space is stylish, functional, and personalized just for you.

Making the Most of the Small Space

One of the reasons I like the dorm room above is that it makes good use of space. Below the bed is a desk and plastic storage drawers that can be used to hold clothes, hair products, craft supplies, or whatever else is needed. The string lights on the wall by the bed make the room look cozy and fun. You can clearly see how organized this dorm room is. Because, dorms are usually really small, organization is key to having a dorm room that will be comfortable and functional.

Here’s another dorm room (above) with fun string lights. This room also has one bed on top of the other, further maximizing floor space. You can see that the area underneath the bottom bed is used for extra storage. You can do the same in your dorm room (underneath your bed) with plastic bins and boxes that can easily slide in and out from under the bed.

This looks more like a shared bedroom, but the use of space is essentially what you often see in dorm rooms. Check out how the beds are mounted high to allow the space underneath to act as an entertainment/living room area. There’s a futon under one bed and a TV under the other. I also love the glam elements, like the shag rug and cabinet. You can see that there are floating ottomans that can be used to put trays (for food and drinks) or extra seating.

Fun DIY Projects

You’re going to spend a lot of time in your dorm room, so it must be stylish! What better way to customize your dorm room than doing DIY projects that are easy, inexpensive, and fun?

Here are some cute projects that you can do on your own or with your room mate:

This one was super easy to make. I simply painted on lyrics with black acrylic paint on a white canvas board.

How fun is this Tic Tac Toe board made out of old records. If you don’t have records, you can make this with any flat round items. Check out the Living in Fashion blog to get the tutorial.

This is super cute and easy to do. Simply print your photos and attach them with clothespins to yarn or embroidery thread. Seen on Homedit.

So, what’s your plans for decor in your dorm room? Know of anymore dorm room essentials that you’ll need?

Till next time,
