My Apartment: Sophisticated Living Room with Natural Elements – Design Board

I’m so happy to let you guys know that I’m partnering with RugsUSA and Lighting Etc. to show you how I’m decorating my small living room.

[warning]UPDATE: I went with a different look for my living room. See that look (inspired from the design board) here. Then, I moved to a new apartment. See the new look here. [/warning]

As I’ve mentioned before, my apartment is really small and working from home makes it feel even smaller. I’m on a mission to show you guys how I make use of my small space, while working from home, storing tons of business stuff, and entertaining for family and friends – all while sharing the space with my fiance and malti-poo, Pocahontas. Last week, I revealed the small changes I made in my kitchen that really made a big impact. Check that out here.

Being a designer, it tends to be easy to figure out what a client wants and interpreting their wants and needs into a beautiful, functional space. But, for us, we usually have a hard time deciding on the right design. For me (and a lot of other designers I know), it’s hard, because I have so many different ideas floating in my head at one time. So, I struggle trying to figure out which one (or more) of the idea(s) will work for me.

The one think that I knew for sure is that I wanted to start with a black and white base and layer color and interest in the form of pillows and art.

The sophistication and neutral colors of this room really inspired me. I love how the designer chose a “50 shades of gray” color scheme and brought in a small pop of color with the yellow pillow.

Although I really love the room above, I want more color and some fun accents. Greenery is also a must.

Here’s the rug I chose from RugsUSA:

And these lamp sconces I chose from Lighting Etc are absolutely beautiful and so ME! I can’t wait to put them up.

So, here’s my design board using my new rug and sconces:

As you can see, I’m using black, white, cream, and gray for the major pieces and will be adding some color with the pillows and art. I’m also on the hunt for some unique decorative accessories. On the list to get is some other natural elements, like baskets and plants.

Tomorrow I’ll share with you the floor plan and a couple of wall elevations, so you can get a better idea of how everything will fit together.

Do you like my design board so far? What accent color do you think would look best with black, white, and gray?

Till next time,
