Before and After – Black and White Master Bathroom

I worked on this black and white master bath project a LONG time ago, but I’ve been sharing it on Instagram and remembered that I never shared it here on the blog. Then, my client actually moved out of her home right after we had her first install, so I never got a chance to get professional photos taken OR finish up the last couple of details. It’s a good thing I took decent(ish) photos with my phone, so I can share them with you!

Let’s start with the before photos.

A Total Transformation: Gorgeous, Eclectic Dining Room Reveal

These past couple of months, I’ve been swamped with client projects and pillows, but I have a lot on the way for the blog. I’m so excited to finally reveal photos of my recent eclectic dining room project that I’ve been working on for over a year!

The before photo is a bit sad:

To transform this room, we changed from carpet to slate floors, removed wallpaper, painted the walls, installed custom draperies, changed lighting, and brought in some gorgeous furniture, art, and accessories.

Here’s what the room looks like now:

Painting the walls black and white was the jumping off point for this entire space. The carpet was replaced for these beautiful charcoal slate floors and is probably the update in the room that is my favorite. The black Restoration Hardware table pulls the black from the wall and into the room. It has an extension leaf to seat 10 people. I installed the mirrors to help reflect light around the room. They were in another part of my client’s home, but we felt like would be a better fit in the dining room. (more…)

8 Ways to Successfully Pull Off a Black and White Room

While I love a colorful space (see my living room), I really, really love black and white spaces. Black and white is one of the most classic color schemes and is extremely versatile.

Black and white is sophisticated and sleek, and is the perfect backdrop for an accent color to really make a room pop. The high contrast of black and white can also provide drama and elegance. A black and white color scheme can also be used in a fun, quirky room.

To me, the best-looking black and white rooms are those with contrast and/or a pop of color, and is layered well with different textures. Personally, I feel black and white rooms missing these elements appear to be flat and boring.

Here are some ways to pull-off a black and white room. Use one of two of these tips to elevate your black and white room, or use 2 or more for a more eclectic look.

Use brown wood pieces.

Brown wood pieces, like furniture and accessories look great in black and white rooms. The contrast elevate the pieces in the room, making them look unique and expensive.

My Apartment: Living Room Reveal

Finally!

living room tour via whitneyjdecor.com

I’ve been leading up to this reveal for some time now.

I shared the inspiration for the space here.

And… a bunch of pics on my Instagram of small projects I was completing.

As you may know, I’m in love with small spaces and I’m on a mission to help you guys creatively decorate your own small homes. I live in a one bedroom apartment and run my business entirely from home, so it’s important that my home looks great and is functional for both living and working.

Now, that I’m done decorating my living room (well, sort of… I just have a couple more items I want to get), I can finally show you around.

(Above) Remember the DIY faux fur bench post I did a few weeks ago? Well, I didn’t really have a place for it. When I realized I didn’t have another side table, I put it next to the sofa and I LOVE it here. I can put a solid surface on it like books or a small tray and then it’ll be functional as a place to put drinks and other small knick-knacks. Then, when I need extra seating, I can pull it out.

I purchased the two furry pillows from Pier1 and the black and white cow print is from my shop. I’m making more pillows to put on the sofa. I’ll update you guys when they’re finished.

I love black and white, so it was only right that I chose this chevron rug from RugsUSA. It’s a 100% wool rug and is extremely easy to keep clean. I’ve already had to clean up stains from my dogs dirty paws and had no problem getting the stains out.

(Below) My canvas cow art from Kirklands is one of my favorite parts of the room. It seriously makes me smile everyday. It’s not a piece I would normally chose, but I fell in love with the colors.

I love my Nat King Cole print from Etsy, so it had to go up on the wall.

(Above) My sconces from Lighting Etc. are so beautiful. The design is very unique and really stands out on my gray walls. I love them next to my cow print canvas art. So unexpected.

My sconces are not installed. I usually have really ugly black cords hanging from them for light but I removed the cords for photo purposes. I’m still in the process of having the wiring done (with my landlord’s approval, of course).

Check out the beaded detail.

I shared photos of my chairs on Instagram. I bought them for $26 a piece from Target. One was blue and the other was gray in a cotton blend fabric. The orange vinyl is such a cute pop of color in the space. I NEVER use the color orange, so everyday these are a fun surprise for me.

The beaded pillows were purchased from Pier1.

I am so glad that I used this system for my wall shelving. I purchased it from Home Depot and it’s been incredibly convenient. It’s only 12″ deep, so it doesn’t take up much space, but it’s still deep enough to put books, mags, accessories, and our TV on it. It’s also fully customizable.

(Below) I couldn’t find a pot at the right size for my plant, so I simply braided some yarn and wrapped it around the pot the plant came in.

Zebras are my favorite, so when I saw this zebra print chair on Etsy, I had to have it!

I purchased this vintage art from a flea market last year. It came framed. It’s probably my favorite item I’ve EVER owned.

The color print in the back is from one of my favorite shops on Etsy, Pikabrit. Check her out, guys!

My Apartment: Sophisticated Living Room with Natural Elements – Design Board

I’m so happy to let you guys know that I’m partnering with RugsUSA and Lighting Etc. to show you how I’m decorating my small living room.

UPDATE: I went with a different look for my living room. See that look (inspired from the design board) here. Then, I moved to a new apartment. See the new look here

As I’ve mentioned before, my apartment is really small and working from home makes it feel even smaller. I’m on a mission to show you guys how I make use of my small space, while working from home, storing tons of business stuff, and entertaining for family and friends – all while sharing the space with my fiance and malti-poo, Pocahontas. Last week, I revealed the small changes I made in my kitchen that really made a big impact. Check that out here.

Being a designer, it tends to be easy to figure out what a client wants and interpreting their wants and needs into a beautiful, functional space. But, for us, we usually have a hard time deciding on the right design. For me (and a lot of other designers I know), it’s hard, because I have so many different ideas floating in my head at one time. So, I struggle trying to figure out which one (or more) of the idea(s) will work for me.

The one think that I knew for sure is that I wanted to start with a black and white base and layer color and interest in the form of pillows and art.

The sophistication and neutral colors of this room really inspired me. I love how the designer chose a “50 shades of gray” color scheme and brought in a small pop of color with the yellow pillow.

Although I really love the room above, I want more color and some fun accents. Greenery is also a must.

Here’s the rug I chose from RugsUSA:

And these lamp sconces I chose from Lighting Etc are absolutely beautiful and so ME! I can’t wait to put them up.

So, here’s my design board using my new rug and sconces:

As you can see, I’m using black, white, cream, and gray for the major pieces and will be adding some color with the pillows and art. I’m also on the hunt for some unique decorative accessories. On the list to get is some other natural elements, like baskets and plants.

Tomorrow I’ll share with you the floor plan and a couple of wall elevations, so you can get a better idea of how everything will fit together.

Do you like my design board so far? What accent color do you think would look best with black, white, and gray?
