Send halp! Not help, but HALP! That’s how serious things are in my house. I showed you last week my bar situation, so now we’re working in the kitchen! This One Room Challenge is so far my most challenging round and I’m already thinking about all the design-therapy I’m gonna need when I’m finished!
If you’re not familiar with what I’m talking about, the One Room Challenge is a weekly series started and hosted by Linda of Calling it Home, where we transform a room from start to finish and reveal it at the end. Linda invites 20 participants as featured designers to post updates on Wednesdays, but anyone, anywhere, can join in as a guest participant and post their updates on Thursdays. Typically the ORC is six weeks, but this round we have EIGHT weeks to transform our spaces, having the big reveals on November 17th!
If this is your first time here, let’s keep in mind that I tend to write like I talk when I’m excited! I’m from NOLA, so I want you to hear it in my voice, bay-beh! Also, I’m a LEO, so we love the dramatics. Expect lots of exclamation points! LOL!
So… I’m a New Orleans-based interior designer & influencer. December will be the start of year 3 in my separate-from-my-home design studio/brick-and-mortar – open to the public for retail. Definitely check out behind the scenes of my everyday design biz on IG and support me by visiting my online shop! I love what I do and I LOVE to have visitors in my shop, so whether you’re local or just visiting NOLA for vacation, come say HEY to ya girl!
If you want to see all the previous ORC challenges I participated in, check out my Week 1 intro post.
Okay, so my home looks awful! I’ve been trying my best to clean the dust, but at this point it makes no sense. Between my kids (there they are below) running through and tracking dust all over the place – and the crap all over my living room and dining room, I didn’t know how I was gonna make it!
My dear sister (also my #2 at Whitney J Decor) is coming over tomorrow to help me move everything from these main spaces, into my two guest rooms.
Last week I showed you what the space looked like with bar pretty much gone. Click here to read all about it.
I finally got the sink cabinet off the wall and it makes me soooo much more excited for what this space will look like when it’s done!
So, now I wanna show you the kitchen! Whew chile!
As you can see, there’s a ton of work left to do in this space. Here’s the exhaustive list:
- My dad has to install the custom cabinet boxes he built
- We need to scrape and skim coat the ceiling
- The light fixtures need to be replaced
- Soffit/furdown comes down tonight!
- Continue scraping the mortar off the floors, ugh
- Sand and prime all the cabinets. Remember the lowers are staying.
- Install recessed lighting in kitchen area
- Install pendant over sink
- Replace sink and faucet!
We will have all but the last three tasks done by the end of the week!
It’s a lot, I know, but I am sooooo blessed, so I’m not worried! I have so much support! Besides myself and my husband, my sister helps ALOT, and my dad does most of the work. I’ll even have my mom and brothers help when we start all the painting next week!
Because I’m doing so many spaces (what’s wrong with me, y’all), there’s a TON of design detail involved. I had plans to show you some of it last week, but I’m changing my plans as I go, soooooo… I’m not ready to show you everything just yet. *smile* *wink* *smile*
Here’s a peek of some of the elements involved, including a furniture plan. This wallpaper *chef’s kiss* is from the Pattern Collective, a local New Orleans wallpaper and fabric company that sustained heavy damage from Hurricane Ida. Her entire shop literally had to be gutted. I wanted to do something to help, so I figured by showing off some of her gorgeous product in this major design event, I can bring her some support! Here’s the wallpaper you see in the design board below.
If you know even just a little bit about me, then you know there’s no way this space is gonna be as neutral as it looks in the design board, lol! Check out my IG, you’ll see how I’m mixing color with these key pieces – in big ways! And, there’s a crazy thing I’m doing in my hallway that I pray I don’t chicken out about.
If you look in the small mockup above (bottom left), you might notice the custom cabinet that we’re building! We’re gonna incorporate a bed for Queen (my maltipoo) with storage underneath for the dog toys’ and her cute tees!
Check out my IG today (@whitneyjdecor) and through this weekend to see more elements of the design. I’m gonna show some of the fabrics I’m using and will save it all in my One Room Challenge Instagram highlights!
Next week, I’ll have so many updates to show, especially on the fireplace and in the kitchen!! My home is loading up to be sooooo bomb! I cannot wait to bring ya’ll on a home tour. I can just imagine it now!
Can’t wait to share more! Be sure to follow me on Instagram, to catch the behind the scenes action AND you’ll get to see me actually go through the real mini-reno process of my own home.
And, if you’re in the market for home decor and fun accesories, be sure to take a peek at my shop!
