I tried doing a Periscope video 3 TIMES on Tuesday to share with you guys my 5-step plan to organizing any room in your home. For some reason, Periscope didn’t want me to be great, so I kept buffering and you guys weren’t able to hear me clearly. If you guys don’t have Periscope, download the app and follow me @whitneyjdecor. It’s SOOOOOO addicting!
Anyway, now I’m sharing my 5-step plan here on the blog.
Let’s jump right in.
Step 1: Remove all visual clutter and anything that belongs in another room.
This is super important. There’s no way you can effectively organize your space if your room is cluttered with stuff all over the place. Have 4 boxes labeled, “trash”, “giveaway”, “sell”, and “move to another room”. Right now you’re going through everything that you can see. Don’t worry about the stuff hiding away in your drawers and cabinets.
Step 2: Go through your closed storage, like drawers, cabinets, and any boxes you may have stored in the room.
Use your boxes from Step 1, to help you get rid of stuff that doesn’t belong.
Step 3: Plan an efficient layout where items should go in your space.
I like to use sheets of paper with labels like “bookcase”, “office supplies”, “clothes rack”, “file cabinet”, “magazines”, or any other labels needed to visualize where things should go in your room. After you’ve figured out where all your furniture and smaller items should go, now you can move everything in place. Check out my space planning post for help with maximizing your space and creating zones.
Step 4: Use decorative storage boxes, baskets, and plastic organizers to organize your stuff.
For me, this is the fun part. This is where you get to store your stuff in a way that you’ll know how to find it. You can use pretty containers, like these below.
Step 5: Label everything.
There are plenty different labels you can use. You can make your own, buy them from an office supply store (or Target – I love Target for all things office), or from my favorite shop on Etsy for labels and organizing supplies.
[line]That’s it, guys! This simple process will make it easy to get your space organized. These steps would work in any room in your home.
