Three Container Planter Ideas for Planting Succulents

I know I’m not the only one in love with succulents, they’re super popular right now. It seems like all the popular magazines and bloggers are featuring room designs that have beautiful succulents in beautiful pots. They’re especially everywhere on subscribe to my YouTube channel! Not only do I love to look at them, but I love planting succulents, too, because it’s so easy!

Whenever I stop at Home Depot or Lowe’s, I make sure to make a visit to see if there are any new varieties.

A few months ago, I actually came across lots of them at Walmart on clearance. I bought at least 20 and have been trying to find a place for them all around my home. I’ve already given a few to clients, and needed some planters for the ones I had left.

If you’ve ever been shopping for planters for ANY plants, you know nice ones are hard to find and/or aren’t cheap.

Here’s three ideas for planters that you can use for planting succulents, with two of them being super thrifty!

Reuse an Old Candle Jar

This is becoming one of my favorite ways to replant small plants, like succulents, because they don’t require lots of space (unless you get one of the larger varieties, obviously).

I used an old Chesapeake Bay Candle jar to repot a set of three different succulents and I LOVE how it turned out. To reuse your own candle jar, simply melt the wax on your stove, clean the jar really well, add rocks to the bottom of the jar, and plant your succulents with well-draining light soil (like a cactus mix).

Use your Favorite Vase

I’ve had this little vase for a couple years now and it’s still one of my favorites. It’s a bit too small for a full bouquet of flowers, but was the perfect size for a succulent. I can’t wait until it grows out! I’m hoping it’ll look like a lady with locs as the succulent gets larger.

Recycle a Vintage Tin Box

This was probably my favorite arrangement out of the three and is another thrifty way of planting succulents. Go to your favorite thrift store; I’m sure you’ll find a cute tin box. I bought this vintage tin cigar box a few months ago for a different client install (see that living room project here), but ended up not using it. So, I hoarded it with all the other stuff I don’t use, until I realized I could use it as a planter! It turned out beautifully.
