Bold Wallpaper in a Laundry Room / Half Bath + the Unbelievable Before

Each and every time I wanted to shoot the reveal of this space, something happened that caused me to postpone it. My laundry room / half bath has been “complete” for at least a year, and ever since, I’ve been enjoying how much guests love seeing such a bold wallpaper in a laundry room.

One day I’ll tell the many stories about why it took forever to post this space but for now, just know there were lots (and lots AND lots) of leaks, destroyed walls AND wallpaper, and plenty of changes, since I had a lot of time to contemplate and nitpick.

Here’s what my laundry room looked like right after we moved in.

It was a hot mess. I knew early on that I would replace that utility sink with a vanity and have since moved it to the garage. We bought our washer and dryer right before we moved in, and although it’s not a fancy front load set, I LOVE my washer and dryer. They’re so easy to use, have a steam cycle (which I use faithfully, since I hate to iron), and clean so well. But, I don’t think this set stands up to the current decor of the laundry room, so maybe one day I’ll switch them out.

I started this project last April for the One Room Challenge, but missed the 6-week deadline because of plumbing issues. I initially painted a stencil design on the walls with a white base paint and a copper metallic color for the Art Deco design on top. When I first posted a sneak peek of this on Instagram, I got TONS of people message me about how bomb it was, but the more I looked at it on the walls, the cheaper the design looked. I hate a cheap look.

Here’s what the initial design of the laundry room was:

Although the stencil had to go, I knew I still wanted to do a bold design on the walls. So, when The Pattern Collective reached out to collaborate on a project, I knew that I would find something great for my laundry room in their gorgeous, extensive wallpaper collection. Brittany, from The Pattern Collective, was so helpful and knowledgeable with helping me find something perfect. She was also completely sold on the idea of a bold wallpaper in a laundry room.

I was torn between a few different wallpaper designs, but when the Siberia Dark designed by Witch & Watchman showed up in my search, I was sold! I KNEW it would be the perfect bold wallpaper in a laundry room, because it was everything that I love in a design element: moody, colorful, eclectic, and unexpected! I had already spent many hours working on that stencil project, and this wallpaper was totally worth the extra work of a wallpaper job. How cute are these little animals??? OMG!

I had already done most of the other work in the laundry room by the time I installed the wallpaper. I put down a gray tile, scraped the popcorn off the ceiling, painted the ceiling black, changed the light fixture, installed a bathroom vanity, changed the toilet, and added a mirror.

Quick disclaimer: I DO NOT keep clothes in this laundry room. After I wash and dry, I fold in my living room or bedroom. I’ve never felt comfortable with storing clean clothes in the same place as a toilet, so I really try hard to keep my clothes out. It doesn’t bother me at all, as I get to fold and hang clothes in front of a TV and I actually prefer to keep it pretty and clear, since it’s technically a half bath, too.

One more disclaimer re the toilet: that space between the toilet and dryer looks much tighter than it is, and I can assure you (without TMI) that it’s a comfortable seat, LOL. I actually really love using this “bathroom” and it doesn’t feel claustrophobic at all. I’m sure that’s how it looks, though. With that being said, it’s the wrong toilet. It was supposed to be a round toilet, but an elongated toilet was installed. I’m actually gonna have a round toilet to replace this one, and this elongated one will be put in my guest bath as soon as I start on that space.

My sputnik style light fixture… everything! I toyed with the idea of painting it black or gold, but y’all know I hate for too many things to match in a room and love to mix my metals. I have it installed on a dimmer to set a moody ambiance in the evenings. I just wish I would have taken a great picture of it on dim, because the room looks so cozy and beautiful with the lights down low.

Since this wallpaper is so graphic, I knew from the very beginning that I wouldn’t be putting much on the walls. But, I did found this shell art and HAD to have it. It brought some warm colors to the room that I felt was needed.

Also, my gorgeous Scott Living vanity from Lowes (not available anymore) is solid wood with a beautiful marble top. It’s such a special piece in this space and I just love all the storage it has. I’m team #vanitydrawers over #vanitydoors whenever possible. This gorgeous matte black Delta faucet from Hausera is the icing on the cake!

I chose a simple round, black mirror to flow with the organic shapes in the wallpaper. I usually keep styling on the vanity super simple, since there’s not much space here.

This cabinet used to store fabric in my home office, but I found it to be perfect here in the laundry room. It sits in between the washer and dryer to store all my laundry items, along with extra toilet paper and cleaning supplies. I used a frosted glass spray paint to hide the contents.

Above the cabinet, I have a tray that corrals laundry detergent in a drink dispenser, OxiClean in a jar, and a candle. I also have a plant here that hates me (you’ll know what I mean if you watch my IG stories).

One last disclaimer, because I know someone will have this question: we do NOT hang anything to dry in this room, which is why there is no clothesbar here. I have a small hook behind the door (not pictured), just in case we ever need to briefly hang anything. Everything but bras go in the dryer. The very few items that we have that can’t be dried, go to the cleaners.
