Today is Day 2 of my 10 Days to an Organized Home challenge!
The 10 Days to an Organized Home Challenge (#10DaysOH) is all about freeing your home of access clutter and making it more functional. We’ll be working each day in another part of your home to get rid of things that you don’t need and make a designated place for everything that you do need.
If you’re just joining in on the challenge, check out Day 1: the Kitchen.
Today, we’re working in the pantry. If you don’t have a pantry, and are using cabinets for food storage, the same tips would apply. Make sure you share before, during, and/or after pics on social media with the hashtag #10DaysOH. If you aren’t signed up for the challenge already, sign up here. You’ll receive an email each day with your daily assignments.
Here’s your tasks for today:
- Finish your tasks from yesterday’s challenge in the kitchen
- Clean and reorganize your pantry
I want to thank the sponsors that are giving away some awesome products throughout the challenge: Angioletti Designs, The Mad Platters, Gneiss Spice, & Sweet Water Decor. Today, I’ll share the winner of our first giveaway on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
Clean and reorganize your pantry
If you’re lucky enough to have a pantry, it’s probably cluttered and organized. I’m sure you don’t even know what you have in there. That IS the reason you’ve joined this challenge, right?
I don’t have a pantry, so I’m sharing how I helped my mom with hers. Here’s the before photo:
It was rarely used and served as a catchall place for stuff that couldn’t fit in her cabinets. She keeps most of her food items in her kitchen cabinets, but wanted the pantry to house her baking supplies, small appliances, and other miscellaneous stuff that would usually sit on the counters.
Here’s what it looks like now:
To start, removed everything out of her pantry and gave the entire interior a fresh coat of white paint, including the brown shelves. I scraped off the old white paint on the door, but kept it brown.
She wanted to bring in the color red. I suggested that we mix it with a little black and white. Then, I gathered everything that needed to be stored in the pantry.
She had a lot of plastic containers bought from wholesale supply stores that used to hold parsley, garlic powder, sugar, etc., so we cleaned them out, scraped off the old labels, and created new labels to help organize the food that will be stored in the pantry. For the labels, I simply used mailing labels and trimmed each one with black and white polka dot washi tape.
I added and labeled a basket “baking” to hold her baking foods, like baking powder, small pie crusts, and cake mixes. She needed a new mixing bowl, so we bought this cute one from Walmart and stored it next to her baking foods.
As you can see, I also added in two inexpensive wood art pieces that she had for a LONG time. They work perfect in her pantry. Don’t be afraid to add a little art in your pantry for an unexpected touch and pop of fun.
I bought a rattan basket for the floor. Potatoes, large containers, textiles, and anything else that can’t fit on the shelves can be stored here. Next to the basket is her electric knife and waffle maker.
So, what do you think? This is definitely a transformation from what it was before, but it was fairly easy just by removing knick-knacks and only storing what was necessary.
Ready to organize your pantry? Here are some tips.
Tips to Organize your Pantry
- Remove everything out of your pantry.
- Clean dirty walls and add a coat of paint, if needed.
- Throw away (or give away) anything that isn’t being used or move them to a more fitting place.
- Reserve your top shelf for items you don’t use too often.
- Use baskets and other storage containers to corral like items or smaller items that can be pulled out together at once.
- Use stackable storage containers to stack items and maximize shelf space.
- Reuse old food containers, clean them, and make new labels.
