With Christmas less than 60 days away, I’m excited to start getting myself together for our family Christmas party. I’m starting with my mom’s bookcase that used to be in her kitchen.
Am I the only one that thinks “black” whenever it comes to painting something? Sometimes I think that I’m extremely limiting myself and other times I just think black is like the only stylish solution. LOL. If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll see that there’s a lot of things that get painted black around here that don’t get a chance to make it on the blog.

The bookcase was a hub for stuff that never got used, so we figured it would be better used in my mom’s living room for display (throughout the year) and light snacks and drinks (for the holiday parties).
[disclaim]Check out my most recent article with Ceasarstone; “Being Good to the Environment: Eco-friendly Kitchens & Bathrooms”[/disclaim]We decided on black paint, because (1) you can’t go wrong with a black bookcase and (2) black, cream, and brown is the main color scheme in my mom’s home.
To paint the bookcase, I used the HomeRight FinishMax paint sprayer which was an absolute dream to work with. HomeRight sent it to me to share with you guys (I’ll share how-to + more details about it in a later post), but I couldn’t help first trying it out on the bookcase.
So, I simply moved the bookcase to my mom’s garage, took off all the hardware and doors, gave it a light scrub with some sandpaper, and painted it three coats of Behr’s Limousine Leather (my favorite black paint ever). The FinishMax was pretty easy to use, and even though the attached paint reservoir looks small, it holds a good amount of paint. I didn’t have to refill for the three coats of black paint on this bookcase.

The bookcase turned out beautifully. The black coat of paint is so refreshing and really pops against my mom’s neutral walls. I’m excited to share how we’re using this piece for the holidays, so make sure you sign up to my email list to get notifications of new blog posts. Also, follow me on Instagram, because I’m always sharing sneak peeks into the different projects I’m working on!
I pulled some accessories that weren’t being used around my mom’s home for the bookcase, especially our favorites: the amber carnival glass pitcher and wine goblets.

Till next time,
Wow this is a great transformation!!
Thanks so much, Ijeoma!
The black bookcase looks great Whitney! Its a very nice change from what is was. I know your mom loves it.
Thanks, Erin! She loves it a lot!
Nice transformation just in time for the holidays. Like how you dedicated some shelf space in the bookcase to use as a home bar.
I absolutely love it. It is the perfect gray and you styled it with perfection.
Thanks, Charlene! It’s actually a black (Limousine Leather by Behr), but it does come off as a really dark gray.
This came out so beautifully Whitney!!!! I thought the same thing about my sprayer–I barely had to refill and I felt like I used a lot of paint! This paint sprayer is the bomb.com
Thank you, Carli! I was so surprised that the canister held that much paint.
