Red, Blue, and Green Transitional Living Room

I am so excited to share this project (I know, I know, I’m always excited!), because this is a bit outside of what you see here on the blog. You may have seen the above sneak peek in my recent Sunday’s Best post (heard about that series?).

Let’s start with the before photos:

My clients’ home was feeling very traditional with the vintage furniture that she inherited. They wanted to keep some of the pieces (and her new Pottery Barn sectional), but bring in some furniture with straighter lines to give the room an updated, transitional look. My clients wanted to add some color to the walls and sectional and wanted to keep it simple with the accessories. That was definitely the biggest challenge for me, because I LOVE to accessorize, so much so that I’m working on an “accessorizing only” design package for my local New Orleans peeps!

So, initially, my clients were thinking painting just the wall with the French doors, but I convinced them that it wouldn’t do enough for the room, since the wall is full of the door and windows. We ended up painting the entire living room area in a shade of either blue or green, and we settled on Sherwin-Williams’ Oyster Bay. Y’all, this is the most gorgeous, neutral shade of green ever! I’m loving how well it plays with the grays, blacks, and reds. It was seriously the most perfect color for this room.

As you can see, the floor plan stayed the same, but we removed the heavy cabinet and two side chairs from the right wall. The chairs weren’t needed and the cabinet was way too bulky. Plus, as I mentioned, my clients wanted to give this room some modern lines. Bringing in pieces with metal accents, like the media console, side table, coffee table, and console table were the perfect way to do that.

Also, as you’ve noticed, my clients’ vintage rug stayed and I’m so glad it did. I loved it when I first walked into their home and knew it would be the perfect piece to pull colors from for the new design.There’s the red, some soft green, and blues in the rug. That’s seriously a great, classic color scheme.

This iron and marble console table from Wisteria was the last piece we got in and we had to wait months for it! It was the first piece that I found for the space and was the last to come in. How ironic! It’s a beautiful, high quality piece that’ll be in my clients’ home for years to come and I love how versatile it is. When they have a need for more storage, they can move this piece to their hallway upstairs and replace it for a console with drawers and doors. The framed photo above it is probably one of my favorite pieces in the room.

The gorgeous red velvet pillows have a beautiful copper metallic detail on them and they’re available in my shop. The other pillows are custom made by me.

I would have never suggested this coffee table if it wasn’t for my clients wanting a convertible coffee table that they can pull up and eat to. Yes, the table top extends high, so the top is at table height for comfy eating and working from a laptop. There were plenty of different options, but this one was beautiful. My clients loved it as soon as I showed it to them. I wish I had gotten a photo of it in the converted state!

The media console was just way too good to pass up. Can you believe that my client’s didn’t love it when I first showed it to them? They actually had me look for another and when I found another one (that I also loved, maybe more), they went back to this one. Once it delivered, they REALLY, REALLY loved it. Trust your designers, people!

Also, did you notice the blue Queen Anne chair? It’s a vintage piece that my client loved already and inquired about getting it reupholstered, since it was also really comfortable. I’m glad we went that route, because I found this beautiful blue fabric that went perfectly with the rest of the room.

We went with a simple gallery wall to flank the peninsula. I found these beautiful prints from Minted and got them framed.

Lastly, I got these gorgeous bookcases from Cb2 and they’re such great pieces for displaying photos and accessories that my client wouldn’t otherwise want cluttering the living room. Because it’s right across from the kitchen area (that I didn’t design), it’s also a great place for dishware and cookware.

I LOVED working on this project. It was definitely different from the projects you’ve seen in my portfolio, but it’s great to have a transitional room to add to the “repertoire”, LOL.
