3 Common Paint Problems and How to Solve Them

Most of us are faced with having to paint at some time in our lives. The thing is, if you’re going to invest all that time and effort in painting your home, you want the end result to look good. The hard part of achieving this is overcoming some of the hurdles you can face while you’re painting. The good news is that painting problems are not unsurmountable, and you can achieve that great result at the end of the day.

Painting a Ceiling

Ceilings can seem extremely problematic to paint; but they don’t have to be. First you need to use a brush to paint in the hard to access areas around the edges and in the corners. It is a good idea to use a small sash brush and to paint around two inches in from the edge, around the whole ceiling. Then you can use a roller with an extension pole to paint the remainder of the ceiling. Work from the corner and out across the room, painting in an M shape and then filling in the gaps.

Preventing roller marks

Roller marks can look unsightly and spoil your paint job. One of the most important things to remember is that it is worth investing in a decent quality roller; you can have problems with cheaper, less substantial rollers. You should always make sure that you slightly overlap each stroke of the roller with the last one. It’s not a good idea to let paint dry during painting as overlapping paint that has already dried can cause noticeable marks.

What happens if paint runs?

This is a fairly common problem and one that can leave your paintwork looking less than perfect. One thing it is important to note is that if paint does start running it could be a sign that you have too much paint on your roller or brush. It could also be a sign that you are not correctly spreading the paint across the surface. Amending either of these can help prevent runs from occurring. If you do have runs in your paintwork you can use sandpaper to remove them when the paint is dry, and touch up the area.

Painting is not always easy but you do get a great sense of accomplishment when you’ve finished. You can stand back and admire the good job you have done. These are only a few of the issues you might encounter, but hopefully, it’ll help future painting you do easier and more successful.
