Easy DIY Canvas Board Art Using Song Lyrics

I saw a Pinterest post some time ago of song lyrics written on a large canvas board. I never repinned the image, but I remember telling myself that I would do it one day. I didn’t even click through to the website of the post, because I figured I could get the same look very easily with just a couple of steps.

All you need is a canvas board, black paint (or any other color paint you want), a paintbrush to paint your words on, and an idea of what you want to write on your board.

I already had the canvas board, brush, and paint. I chose to write the words to my favorite song, “For You”, by Kenny Lattimore.

Here’s what I did:

1st Step:

Outline your words on your canvas board with a pencil. This way you’ll easily be able to erase and rewrite any screw-ups, while trying to get the placement of your words right.

2nd Step:

After your words are in place with pencil, trace over them with your paintbrush dipped in paint. I went over certain words and letters more than others, and left some words with a brushed, barely there finish. (No particular reason, sometimes I just didn’t feel like going over some spots again.)

3rd Step:

Let dry. Or you can “go above and beyond”, like I did, and pour glitter on some of the words. I chose to put black glitter on every “you” on the board I simply poured the glitter directly on the wet words. Then, I let the whole thing dry.

4th Step:

Spray Hi-Gloss Clear spray paint on your board and let dry completely. (no picture, sorry!)

5th Step:

Enjoy!! (I may or may not have “borrowed” someone’s wall, hung up the canvas board, and took the picture. I love the way the white and black pops on the pink.) Most likely I’ll put it in my office when I’m able to work on all the mess…

That’s it guys! Super easy, super customizable art. It has a lot of “character” (mistakes), but I figured that’s what DIY’s are all about, right? Or, maybe I was too lazy to fix the mistakes?

This could easily be done in a fancy font with words from a kid’s favorite bedtime story. Maybe you could first paint the board a soft gray color and write the words in cursive in a cute color, like pink, blue, or purple??
